My mission is to provide creative but practical and affordable design, from concept to print..
Im often asked what is a graphic design and what is it that I actual do, most people have some vague idea of what we do, logo design, something in Photoshop? Pretty drawings? Yes to all of these, but these are a small part of a much broader offering.
“Everything is design” – Paul Rand
I try explaining that graphic design is all around us and speaks to us on many levels hundreds times a day, without you maybe realising it. Almost everything with an image and text is the work of a graphic designer, we use images, typography, shapes, illustrations, textures and colours to create everything from branding to advertising, packaging and digital design.
“People ignore design that ignores people.”
– Frank Chimer
Graphic design is all about communication, and although it needs to look nice too, the most import part is that it gets your message or information across clearly to its target audience. Often the graphic design process starts with a key message or aim and then we the graphic designers act as a visual-thinking problem solvers to find the best solutions to communicate this message in an impactful, clear, creative way.
— ABOUT —
My name is Helen Gray Baker and I am a qualified Graphic Designer based in Kent. I have over 10 years experience in the design industry as well as working within marketing and specialise in print based Graphic Design, Branding and Corporate Communication.
For me, design is not just a hobby, or a job its part of everything I do, weather its on a computer or in the kitchen or simply decorating our home. Some would say i have an unhealthy obsession with Pinterest but I love browsing inspiration for my next project! I was born and raised in London and I have Norwegian heritage, which is a big influence in some of my designs and creations.
Although the brand and name dippyDesign was established whilst I was studying my graphic design degree, to allow me to build my portfolio for prospective work, I have since used it as the foundations to developed it into my business dippydesignmakebake which I set up in January 2012. dippyDesignMakeBake allows me to bring all my creativity together and help me fuse my graphic design and hand-made designs.
“Good design is in all the things you notice. Great design is in all the things you don’t.”
- Wim Hovens
Also having a background in print and a father in the industry, Ive developed a deeper appreciation for traditional press printing and a love for ‘design you can feel, as well as picking up a slightly weird addiction of the smell of freshly printed ink. Ive always been keen on utilising my passion for print within my own designs.
So when I needed to brand my own company I turned to Pantone for inspiration, with my company being founded in 2012, Pantone's colour for that year was Tangerine Tango. Although Tangerine Tango is a shade to bright for my taste I used it as a palette shade from which my ‘fusion coral’ corporate colour was born. I think this helps remind me of the begins of my business and how colour and design are intertwined. Although I have made subtle styling and font changes over the years the colour has remained and complimentary shades have been added to my corporate colour palette to strengthen my brand styling.
